BOSTON -- The Dodgers and Red Sox are closing in on a deal to send Adrian Gonzalez, Josh Beckett, Carl Crawford and Nick Punto to Los Angeles, though a few hurdles remain before it's official, multiple baseball sources said Friday. (ESPN.com)
All I have to say is "holy shit!"
Just think of these three walking towards the exit, bags in hand, surrounded by a hoard of reporters and sports writers. Can you imagine Adrian Gonzalez slamming the camera, finally unleashing his hatred of the Boston media? Or Carl Crawford, head down, shuffling towards the exit, nervous of life in another big market? Or maybe Josh Beckett nonchalantly waltzing towards the door while he thinks of all the beautiful golf courses California has to offer? In terms of shock level, this trade would be Nomar or Manny times two. To trade Beckett, who's been the face of the pitching staff over the past five years, as well as Crawford and Gonzalez, who are supposed to be the face of the next five years, would be mind-blowing. Could this signal a rebuilding process for the Sox? Could this mean that Jacoby Ellsbury will be traded this winter? This would entail the acceptance of a rebuilding period in a city that is not used to rebuilding periods. Cutting this much payroll and replacing it with younger prospects would be a tremendous change on a team used to buying free agents. Or perhaps this is a salary dump designed to continue the usual philosophy. " These guys aren't winning, lets dump them and buy some new ones." Felix Hernandez and Josh Hamilton are in the waiting.
