Blockbuster Trade in the Works?!

BOSTON -- The Dodgers and Red Sox are closing in on a deal to send Adrian GonzalezJosh BeckettCarl Crawford and Nick Punto to Los Angeles, though a few hurdles remain before it's official, multiple baseball sources said Friday. (ESPN.com)

All I have to say is "holy shit!"
Just think of these three walking towards the exit, bags in hand, surrounded by a hoard of reporters and sports writers. Can you imagine Adrian Gonzalez slamming the camera, finally unleashing his hatred of the Boston media? Or Carl Crawford, head down, shuffling towards the exit, nervous of life in another big market? Or maybe Josh Beckett nonchalantly waltzing towards the door while he thinks of all the beautiful golf courses California has to offer? In terms of shock level, this trade would be Nomar or Manny times two. To trade Beckett, who's been the face of the pitching staff over the past five years, as well as Crawford and Gonzalez, who are supposed to be the face of the next five years, would be mind-blowing. Could this signal a rebuilding process for the Sox? Could this mean that Jacoby Ellsbury will be traded this winter? This would entail the acceptance of a rebuilding period in a city that is not used to rebuilding periods. Cutting this much payroll and replacing it with younger prospects would be a tremendous change on a team used to buying free agents. Or perhaps this is a salary dump designed to continue the usual philosophy. " These guys aren't winning, lets dump them and buy some new ones." Felix Hernandez and Josh Hamilton are in the waiting.

What Could've Been...

For a moment while I was watching tonight's RedSox game, I reminisced on the magic of late season baseball. As a 20-year old RedSox fan, I've familiarized myself with meaningful baseball games under the mystifying lights of Fenway during the dog days of summer.  When Aviles was called out after a close play at first and the fans erupted in a deafening boo, I was reminded of the energy that usually fills this ballpark in late August. An energy created by the intensity of the moment, heightened by a sense of meaning, as if a playoff berth was at stake. Unfortunately, with the RedSox battling Toronto for the worst of the worst in the AL east, these games sure don't mean much. Upon accepting this fact, as I do during every game I watch, this nostalgia quickly faded. Instead, as the Sox ultimately lost 14-13 in eleven innings, I couldn't help but think that there is no magic surrounding this current team. The lovable "idiots" who characterized the 2004 team have been replaced by a bunch of over-paid, underachieving losers. While the baseball gods must have loved the 2004 team for their hard-working, blue-collar, team-first mentality, they've got to hate this team for being lazy, pampered, and selfish. If these gods are indeed behind luck (which unfortunately hasn't been too kind to the Boston sports teams recently), then it shows, as the RedSox have gotten the sh*t end of the stick this season. Regardless, this team's unacceptable performance on the field indicates the need for a serious culture change within the organization.

What We Could be Saying About the Sox...

So after the 14-1 thrashing of the lowly Indians, I once again asked what could've been for the talent-loaded roster. I envisioned a parallel universe in which it is also August 13, 2012. But in this imagined world, there are a few significant differences:

Bobby Valentine turned his former disguise into a permanent look, thus creating an alternate reality.

Ellsbury and Crawford were in the lineup at the start of the season. Ellsbury once again has put himself in the MVP discussion and Crawford is in the midst of a comeback season, currently batting .300 with 35 stolen bases.

Lester, Beckett and Buchholz have looked like their once-dominate selves all possessing 10+ wins and sub-4 ERAs.

Andrew Bailey never tore a tendon in his thumb and went on to win the closer role at the end of spring training. The offseason trade has paid its dividends as he currently sits third in the AL with 32 saves.

Dustin Pedroia avoided a debilitating thumb injury and currently leads the AL in batting average.

The RedSox have had their desired lineup together and healthy for most of the season.

David Ortiz and Adrian Gonzalez have combined for 60 homeruns, forming the deadliest 3-4 combination in baseball.

Kevin Youkilis and Bobby Valentine never butted heads. Will Middlebrooks is still stuck in AAA as Youk returns to being the on-base machine that was his former self.

What could all this mean?

The RedSox have seemingly put the whole chicken and beer fiasco behind them, as they sit atop the AL east with the best record in baseball at 75-41. The media applauds the hiring of Bobby Valentine and commend him for the stricter culture he has brought to the clubhouse. The RedSox are the World Series favorite as they lead baseball in runs scored and have the best 1-2-3 starting pitcher combination in the MLB.

The thing is, this hypothetical world is not ridiculous. Perhaps the likelihood of all these things working out perfectly as imagined is small, but it is certainly conceivable that at least a few of them could work out. Yet, inexplicably it seems that whatever could have gone wrong, has gone wrong. Even on a game-to-game basis it seems that our reprieve from being cursed was only temporary. The RedSox have been unable to win close games. A franchise defined by magical moments the past decade has only two walkoff wins all year. It just seems like something is missing from this team. The intangibles that allow a team (Baltimore) with a -41 run differential to be in the thick of the playoff race (while the Sox (+41) are unable to break .500), are nowhere to be found. Is it from lack of desire, or is it simply a case of bad luck? Whatever it is, it's maddening to think of what could've been.

McKayla Maroney aka "bitch face"

McKayla Maroney has the ultimate bitch face. I absolutely love it. Not to mention she's gonna be a smokeshow in a few years. I don't know if it's genetics or just coincidental but it always seems like girls with bitch faces are bitches, or at least have a serious attitude. It's crazy when you think about it. But hey, I can't hate. There's nothing like a hot girl with a bitch face. Guaranteed freak 100% of the time.

Valeting at a 5-star hotel= $200,000 Cars on Deck

$200,000 Audi R8 Spyder. All I have to say is wow. Imma be driving something similar to this one day. You can bank on that.

The 2012 RedSox Are Dead to Me...Almost

I've been waiting and waiting and waiting all year for the RedSox to make a run. I've been expecting this team to put together an 8+ game winning streak on their way to the top of the wild card standings. I've said time and time again that this team has way too much talent to be a .500 team. But here we are on August eighth and the Sox are still treading water, fighting to stay alive in the playoff hunt. And although I stubbornly continue to hold out a smidgen of hope deep down, the reality of the situation is grim. Yes, a 5.5 game deficit in the wild card standings with the additional wild card seems manageable with 50 games still to play. But what everyone must realize is that there are five teams ahead of them. The Sox will need at least four of those teams to falter, or they'll have to play at an other-worldly rate, perhaps winning 35 or more of the 50 remaining games. With the talent on this team, I've believed all year that such a run was within reach. For precedent, just look back to last year when essentially the same roster put together a 37-18 record from July to the end of August. The difference this year is that for whatever reason, this team cannot for the life of them play with any sort of consistency. It's honestly baffling. In a sport that is based more on individual play than say football or basketball, their futility is making me re-evaluate this perception. With some exceptions, on a night to night basis, this team has played one of three ways, all of which we saw in the last series against Texas.

  1. Everyone plays well. The top of the lineup gets on base and the middle of the order drives them in. They'll show how dynamic and potent their lineup can be en route to scoring 7 or more runs. The starting pitcher is solid and the game is essentially in the bag by the seventh inning. I start to think that this team has finally turned the corner and will go on that elusive 5+ game winning streak (their longest of the season). Case and point, the 9-2 win against Texas on Monday.
  2. The offense shows why they have scored the third most runs in baseball. But the pitching sucks. Either the starter gets lit up, or the bullpen comes in and blows a lead. Case and point the 10-9 loss today in which Beckett got lit up for 8 runs and the bullpen couldn't preserve the tie.
  3. The pitching staff shows glimpses of their potential as the starter delivers a solid performance. But the offense shows that although they've scored a lot of runs on the season, they've had far too many games in which they've scored three runs or less. Case and point the 6-3 loss yesterday in which Lester was solid, although still not his 2010 self.
All in all it's been far too much of #2 and #3. They hit, but they don't pitch. They pitch, but they don't hit. When they do everything well, they can't put it together more than a few games. This isn't a team, it's several units who haven't gelled whatsoever. It's like the baseball gods are playing one big joke on me. Everytime I get my hopes up, they're crushed. I.e. winning to go a season high five games over .500, just to lose six of seven before the all-star break. The walkoff homerun by Cody Ross against the WhiteSox, a moment that I truly believed would ignite this team, only to be followed by a four game losing streak. Winning four in a row against the Yankees and Tigers, just to lose three of four to the lowly Twins. Like I said, it's baffling. Is the chemistry really as bad as the media says, and can that really trump talent? Or is it simply a matter of a bunch of under-achieving, over-paid losers? Whatever it is, I'm trying real hard to stop caring, although it's in my nature to never say never. I need me some Patriots to be reminded of what a team looks like.

Mark Gormley is Electric!

So I just recently discovered this dude. I was blown away. How has this hidden gem not won a Grammy yet? Just pure talent that can't be taught. I haven't heard such a beautiful voice since Carl Lewis sang that brilliant national anthem. The thing that impresses me the most though is the raw emotion Gormley shows in this video. You can see it in his face. He straight bleeds emotion. I don't know what these little wings did to him, but they should be thanked for inspiring this song. Let me just say, Adele ain't got nothin on Gormley. Oh, and I can't forget to mention his power stance. It just screams alpha male. You can bet bitches be throwin themselves at Gormley where ever he goes.

PS- Gotta credit Katt Productions for dishing out big bucks to put together this visually stunning music video.   Some cheap mothafuckers may use a green screen, but not Phil Katt. He knows you gotta invest to create a star.
